Shaanxi University of Science and Technology Reports 64.38%–81.43% Cross-Subject Motor Imagery Accuracy Across Three Datasets

Summary Researchers at Shaanxi University of Science & Technology developed DWDANet to address EEG differences between people that limit cross-subject generalization. The framework combines multi-scale spatiotemporal feature modeling with dynamically weighted domain alignment. Cross-subject accuracy reached 70.61%, 81.43% and 64.38% on BCI IV-2a, BCI IV-2b and SHU-MI, respectively, outperforming the existing methods compared on all three datasets. The study also reported within-subject results. These evaluation conditions differ: higher within-subject accuracy should not be treated as performance for a new user, and the dataset findings do not establish rehabilitation efficacy.
Why it matters Beyond extracting spatiotemporal EEG features, the framework dynamically weights multiple source domains during alignment. Its focus is on using data from different sources to improve cross-subject classification, rather than only recognition within one participant's data.

BCIwiki (bciwiki.com) — Researchers at Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, China, published DWDANet in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering on October 27, 2026. The motor imagery EEG framework combines multiscale spatiotemporal modeling with dynamically weighted domain alignment to improve cross-subject applicability.

Motor imagery involves imagining movement and can be used by a brain-computer interface (BCI) to identify user intent. However, EEG distributions differ between participants, limiting classification performance and generalization to other people. DWDANet combines multi-scale spatiotemporal feature modeling with dynamically weighted domain alignment to address this problem.

The framework uses multi-scale convolutions to extract spatiotemporal features and a Transformer encoder to model global dependencies. Dynamically weighted multi-source domain alignment supports collaborative modeling across source domains to improve cross-subject generalization.

In within-subject evaluations, DWDANet achieved accuracies of 87.22%, 90.32% and 68.82% on BCI IV-2a, BCI IV-2b and SHU-MI, respectively. In cross-subject experiments, accuracy was 70.61%, 81.43% and 64.38% in the same dataset order, outperforming the other existing methods compared on all three datasets.

The authors interpret these results as evidence that DWDANet could help improve motor imagery EEG classification and cross-subject generalization. These are dataset evaluation results, not established performance in online BCI use or evidence of medical rehabilitation efficacy.
