Mayo Clinic Team Pairs CorTec Implant With BCI2000, Records Stably in Dogs for 3+ Years

Summary A Mayo Clinic team integrated CorTec's Brain Interchange (BIC), an implantable neural sensing and stimulation device, with the open-source BCI2000 software platform to create an open research system for developing and testing implantable brain-computer interfaces and closed-loop neuromodulation, in which the device reads brain signals and adjusts stimulation accordingly. In long-term validation in 5 dogs, with the longest implant exceeding 3 years, the system maintained stable chronic recording, documented gradual degradation of some channels and its mechanical causes, and still decoded brain function more than 2 years after implantation. The team also showed one-dimensional cursor control was feasible in 1 human participant and released its surgical, imaging and analysis protocols and data. The work is a preprint and has not been peer reviewed.
Why it matters Few academic groups can get hold of a usable implant, which keeps implantable BCI research concentrated in a handful of labs; an open, documented commercial-device stack could lower that barrier, though the human evidence so far rests on a single participant using a benchtop evaluation kit rather than an implanted device.

BCIwiki (bciwiki.com) — Researchers integrated CorTec's Brain Interchange (BIC), an implantable neural sensing and stimulation device, with the open-source BCI2000 platform and validated the resulting system in 5 canines, with the longest implantation exceeding 3 years, according to a preprint posted to bioRxiv on August 28, 2026, by a team listing the Department of Neurologic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. The study has not been peer reviewed.

Benchtop and saline testing independently validated previously reported BIC performance and added measurements of the recording noise floor, stimulation and acquisition latencies, and impedance measurement accuracy, the authors said. In the canines, the system delivered stable chronic recordings while capturing progressive channel deterioration and its underlying mechanical causes.

The platform supported active functional decoding more than 2 years after implantation, closed-loop stimulation driven by arbitrary spectral biomarkers, detection and modulation of epilepsy-associated biomarkers, and recording of stimulation-evoked potentials, according to the preprint. The team also moved an established one-dimensional BCI cursor-control paradigm onto the BIC benchtop evaluation kit and showed it was feasible in 1 human participant.

The researchers released standardized surgical, imaging and analysis pipelines along with datasets and software, and described their battery of quantitative tests as a blueprint for characterizing implantable neuromodulation systems.
