About a third of epilepsy patients do not respond to drugs. The US has approved three implanted stimulation therapies: VNS in 1997, NeuroPace RNS in 2013 and Medtronic's thalamic DBS in 2018. Only RNS senses intracranial EEG before stimulating.
PRECISIS, Adraxe and others are moving electrodes under the scalp or outside the skull. Most remain early; PRECISIS's roughly 200-patient pivotal trial has not read out.
09-23A review of 32 studies finds most stroke protocols pair motor imagery with EEG-driven VR, FES or exoskeleton feedback, averaging about 30 sessions. Benefit depends on modality and stroke profile; dosing remains unstandardised.
09-21Single-neuron recordings from intracortical BCI users show motor cortex responds more to human-like hands during observation. The effect largely vanishes during attempted movement, suggesting device appearance may not limit intuitive control.
