BCIwiki (bciwiki.com) — Researchers at Universitas Hasanuddin in Indonesia and Universiti Malaya in Malaysia have proposed an Intention Matrix framework that classifies brain-wave signals to control a lower-limb exoskeleton during therapy, reported in Engineering, Technology & Applied Science Research on October 4, 2026.
According to the abstract, the Intention Matrix fuses data from the exoskeleton's sensors and generates the control signals sent to the lower control level. When class centroids are generated, the 'Intention wave' plays a significant role; in most cases its value should be the highest for the user's intended movements to be mapped correctly.
The authors say the Intention Matrix modifies an Action Engine by assessing input from proprioceptive sensors and recommendations from a Mitigator block. Collaboration between user and exoskeleton through intention reading begins after the user initiates the limb movement.
The team says the approach shows preliminary feasibility for supporting the EXOS-1 exoskeleton in a therapy scenario. The abstract does not report participant numbers, classification accuracy or clinical outcomes.
