BCIwiki (bciwiki.com) — Tan Tock Seng Hospital has registered a trial of brain-computer interface (BCI)-guided upper limb neurorehabilitation for acute stroke, planning to enroll 12 patients, under NCT07858006, first posted on October 5, 2026 after submission on September 29, 2026. The study pairs BCI-based rehabilitation with functional electrical stimulation using the recoveriX system.
According to the registry description, the system detects motor intent non-invasively through scalp electroencephalography (EEG), relying on event-related desynchronisation (ERD), a characteristic change in mu and beta rhythm activity. The decoded intent drives electrical stimulation, re-coupling cortical motor intent to limb movement to restore closed-loop neurofeedback and promote neuroplasticity through residual neural pathways.
The study aims to examine how these electrophysiological signals change over time after stroke and what that means for BCI-based rehabilitation. It is not yet recruiting, with an estimated start in October 2026 and estimated primary and study completion in December 2027.
