One patient completed an auditory-cued speech task, with four-word classification reaching 77.5% accuracy and a real-time model distinguishing speech from silence in about 20 minutes of data. Three patients completed joystick tasks, with four-direction cursor classification reaching 78% to 84% accuracy. Across six arrays, 954 to 990 channels per array were retained for analysis, and no device-related adverse events were reported during the procedures.
Layer 7 sits on the cortical surface without penetrating brain tissue. The paper demonstrates high-resolution recording and real-time decoding during a limited surgical session, but it does not evaluate chronic signal stability, infection risk or restored function. It was an intraoperative feasibility study, not a pivotal motor-restoration trial.
