Anti-Fouling Coating Shields Neural Electrode, Signal Stays Clear for Six Months

Researchers at the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and collaborating institutions have developed a neural electrode interface that, they report, significantly extended electrode operational lifetime and improved signal fidelity over six months of in vivo implantation. The material, a benzyloxycarbonyl-substituted poly(ornithine-alt-glycine) coating abbreviated OGCbz, resists biofouling and immunogenic rejection without degrading electrical performance, targeting what the authors call the critical obstacle to electrodes that combine long-term recording with tunable biofunctional control: an immune-mediated foreign body response in which glial scar encapsulates implants like cement. Substituting the Cbz group with other functional moieties preserves those antifouling and biocompatibility properties while adding new ones, and as a proof of concept the peptide sequence IKVAV and the antibody cetuximab gave the interface neuron affinity and tumor cell proliferation inhibition respectively; the six-month result came from the IKVAV-functionalized version.

BCI emerges as hotspot in post-stroke motor rehab

Published in Neural Regeneration Research on August 18, 2026, the study conducted a bibliometric analysis of 3173 articles from the Web of Science Core Collection on post-stroke limb motor dysfunction and functional recovery from 2016 to 2025, by authors from Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital, Capital Medical University. The field is in a period of rapid expansion, with technology-assisted rehabilitation as the dominant trend and robot-assisted training and virtual reality as the two major technological keywords. Burst literature analysis revealed three hotspot phases, with the recent phase (2020 to present) covering neuromodulation (brain-computer interface and non-invasive brain stimulation), global disease burden and public health policy. Highly cited studies focus on comparative efficacy, robot-assisted training, brain-computer interfaces, vagus nerve stimulation and prediction of rehabilitation outcomes.

EEG-guided extraction switches speakers in 2.04 s

Researchers report SAGE, a switch-aware EEG-guided soft gating framework for target speaker extraction, posted to arXiv as a preprint on August 3, 2026 and not yet peer reviewed. Under in-trial auditory attention switching, neural noise and intrinsic latency can delay or destabilize attention tracking, and conventional methods often cause discontinuities at switching points. SAGE treats in-trial switching as dynamic selection, generating two candidate speech streams with a robust separator and using an EEG-guided switch-aware gating module to produce smooth fusion weights and suppress transition artifacts. It integrates latency-compensated alignment and an uncertainty-driven conservative strategy, outperforms baselines, achieves 8.67 dB SI-SDR and 88.24% STOI, and reduces average switching latency to 2.04 s.

Adding EMG to Hybrid BCI Expands Command Space from 15 to 60 Targets

Researchers have paired steady-state motion visual evoked potentials (SSMVEP) with electromyography (EMG) in a hybrid brain-computer interface, using a parallel architecture to expand the command space from 15 targets to 60. The multimodal setup reached an information transfer rate of 62.33 bits/min, against 42.49 bits/min for the best single-modality condition. Deep-learning decoding of the two signal streams held classification accuracy steady while lowering the effort required of users with severe motor impairment.
