BCIwiki (bciwiki.com) — Tongji Hospital, part of Huazhong University of Science and Technology’s Tongji Medical College in Wuhan, implanted a brain-computer interface in a 31-year-old man on 26 November 2025. He had been left with high-level paralysis by an accident three years earlier. The procedure was guided by Tang Zhouping, director of the hospital’s BCI research institute, and performed by a team under Shu Kai, deputy hospital director and head of neurosurgery. The device, from Wuhan Neuracom, carries a 64-channel high-throughput flexible electrode array. In a release dated 5 December 2025, China’s National Healthcare Security Administration called this the country’s first BCI operation performed under a state-set price. In March 2025, under the administration’s guidance, Hubei’s provincial healthcare security bureau issued China’s first price schedule for BCI medical services: 6,552 yuan to implant an invasive system, 3,139 yuan to remove one, and 966 yuan to fit a non-invasive one. This operation was billed against those officially set prices.
The hospital’s own account is that this was the first time in China a BCI operation had been brought into a hospital’s service catalogue and charged and settled under standard rules.
The hospital also set out its earlier timeline: BCI-related surgery beginning in September 2024, central China’s first implanted BCI operation on 28 June 2025, and what it calls the world’s first 256-channel flexible high-density cortical electrode procedure on 26 August 2025.
