Chinese Hospital Opens Its Own Brain-Computer Interface Research Institute

Why it matters Clinical translation of BCI in China has largely been driven by university labs and companies, with hospitals serving as trial sites and sources of patients. A hospital standing up its own institute is a claim to a position further up that chain, closing the loop of assessment, enrolment, surgical technique, follow-up and device iteration inside the hospital itself. What followed bears that out: the same hospital performed China's first BCI procedure billed under a published medical service price about two months later, and in March 2026 led the formation of a provincial BCI innovation centre, with the institute's director heading that centre too.
